Local Authors Draw Attention to Censorship

_____, Texas – At __ on ___, local authors, celebrities, students and scholars will gather to celebrate “FREADom,” America’s First Amendment right to access information.
This read-in is designed to showcase literature which has been challenged or banned in schools in recent years and to take a stand against censorship.

Each year, the ACLU of Texas raises awareness of censorship as part of national Banned Books Week (Sept. 24 – Oct. 1) with the release of its annual banned books report, “Free People Read Freely.” In the 2009-2010 school year, they found 87 books were challenged in Texas public schools; of those, one quarter were banned and 20 percent were restricted.

The read-in a community sponsored event in conjunction with the ACLU of Texas’s report and focus on free access to information, culture, and reading materials.
